What is a powered respirator?

Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) safeguard workers against contaminated air. These work by passing the air through a filter, which removes contaminants and particles to supply purified air. A dust respirator offers a high level of comfort and protection when working in environments with higher risks. They are often easier to breathe in due to the powered fans that reduce breathing resistance. This is essential in many industries that find themselves working in dangerous conditions. A powered mask provides numerous benefits compared to conventional respirators. Such as higher protection, enhanced comfort, versatility, and better mobility. They are usually favoured in numerous work environments due to these benefits.

Do they need filters?

Yes, powered respirators need the correct filters for the job at hand. There are lots of filter options which offer versatile use. These filters should be replaced regularly to ensure they provide the best protection. While the general rule of thumb for how often to change the filters will vary depending on the desired brand, they are all similar:

1-3 days for high use

3-5 days for medium use

28 days for light use

What if I have facial hair?

For those with beards find a powered respirator that features a loose-fitting hood, helmet or visor. To work correctly the mask must form a seal against the skin, facial hair can interrupt this. So a looser fitting mask is ideal to ensure the seal isn't broken.
